Description

What is Warticon Cream?

Warticon Cream is a topical antiviral treatment containing podophyllotoxin 1.5mg/g (0.15%). It is specifically licensed for the treatment of external genital warts located on the penis or the external female genital area. It should only be applied to visible external warts and must not be used inside the vagina, anus or urethra.
Genital warts are caused by certain strains of the human papillomavirus (HPV). Although Warticon does not eliminate HPV itself, it helps remove the visible warts caused by the infection.

How Does Warticon Cream Work?

The active ingredient, podophyllotoxin, works by stopping wart cells from dividing. This causes the infected tissue to break down, allowing the wart to gradually disappear over the course of treatment. Healthy skin then replaces the treated area.

Many patients notice improvement after the first treatment cycle, although some warts may require additional weekly treatment cycles.

How to Use Warticon Cream

Always use Warticon exactly as prescribed.
The standard treatment schedule is:

  • Apply a thin layer directly onto each wart twice daily (morning and evening).
  • Continue treatment for 3 consecutive days.
  • Do not apply the cream for the following 4 days.
  • If warts remain, the cycle may be repeated weekly for up to 4 treatment weeks.

Wash your hands before and after application and avoid getting the cream on healthy surrounding skin.

Possible Side Effects

Like all medicines, Warticon may cause side effects, although not everybody experiences them.
Common side effects include:

  • Mild burning or stinging
  • Redness
  • Tenderness
  • Irritation around the treated area
  • Skin erosion where the wart is being treated

These reactions are usually temporary and occur because the medicine is acting on the wart tissue. If you experience severe irritation or signs of an allergic reaction, stop treatment and seek medical advice.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does Warticon take to work?

Many people begin to notice improvement after the first treatment cycle. Some warts require repeated weekly cycles, with treatment lasting up to four weeks if necessary.

Does Warticon cure HPV?

No. Warticon removes the visible genital warts but does not eliminate the underlying HPV infection. Your immune system is responsible for clearing the virus over time.

Can I have sex while using Warticon?

It is generally recommended to avoid sexual contact while the cream is on the skin and until any irritation has settled, as treatment may weaken condoms and irritated skin is more susceptible to discomfort.

Is Warticon available online?

Yes. Warticon Cream is available from RapidMeds following completion of an online medical questionnaire and approval by a registered UK GP.
