Femoston is a sequential or continuous combined HRT preparation designed to replace declining oestrogen levels following the menopause while providing progestogenic protection to the endometrium in women with an intact uterus. Femoston: Hormone Replacement Therapy for Menopausal Symptoms

Femoston is an oral combined hormone replacement therapy (HRT) tablet containing two hormones: oestradiol (oestrogen) and dydrogesterone (progestogen). It is commonly prescribed to women experiencing menopausal symptoms who still have a uterus, as the combination of hormones helps replace declining oestrogen levels while protecting the lining of the womb (endometrium) against excessive thickening (endometrial hyperplasia).

Femoston works by replacing the oestrogen that the body produces less of during menopause. Oestradiol helps relieve menopausal symptoms, while dydrogesterone counteracts the effects of oestrogen on the endometrium, reducing the risk of endometrial hyperplasia associated with oestrogen-only HRT.

The tablets are taken orally once daily. Depending on the prescribed strength and formulation, Femoston may be taken as a sequential treatment, with oestrogen-only tablets followed by combined oestrogen and progestogen tablets, or as a continuous combined treatment.

Benefits of Femoston

Using Femoston for HRT can provide several benefits:

  • Relief from menopausal symptoms: Helps reduce hot flushes, night sweats, mood changes and sleep disturbances associated with declining oestrogen levels.
  • Bone health support: May help prevent bone loss and reduce the risk of postmenopausal osteoporosis in suitable women.
  • Endometrial protection: Dydrogesterone helps protect the lining of the womb against the excessive thickening that can occur with oestrogen-only therapy.
  • Convenient administration: Taken orally once daily, providing a straightforward treatment option for managing menopausal symptoms.

Potential Side Effects

Like all medications, Femoston may cause side effects. Common side effects include:

  • Breast tenderness, pain or swelling
  • Headaches or migraines
  • Nausea or abdominal discomfort
  • Bloating
  • Irregular vaginal bleeding or spotting
  • Changes in mood

Most side effects are mild, although they can persist in some women. Any persistent, unusual or heavy vaginal bleeding should be assessed by a healthcare professional.

Risks, Cautions, and Contraindications

Before starting Femoston, it is important to discuss your medical history and individual risk factors with a healthcare professional. HRT is not suitable for everyone.

Cautions include:

  • A history or increased risk of blood clots (venous thromboembolism)
  • A history of stroke or cardiovascular disease
  • High blood pressure
  • Migraines or severe headaches
  • Diabetes
  • Liver or gallbladder problems
  • A history of endometriosis or uterine fibroids
  • A family history of hormone-sensitive cancers

Contraindications include:

  • Current, previous or suspected breast cancer
  • Known or suspected oestrogen-dependent cancer, such as endometrial cancer
  • Unexplained vaginal bleeding
  • Untreated endometrial hyperplasia
  • Previous or current venous thromboembolism, including deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism
  • Active or recent arterial thromboembolic disease, such as stroke or heart attack
  • Active liver disease or a history of liver disease where liver function has not returned to normal
  • Known blood-clotting disorders, such as protein C, protein S or antithrombin deficiency
  • Allergy to any of the ingredients

As with other systemic HRT treatments, Femoston may be associated with an increased risk of breast cancer, blood clots and stroke. These risks depend on individual circumstances, the type of HRT and duration of treatment.

Regular reviews with a healthcare professional are recommended to assess treatment effectiveness, review potential risks and ensure that Femoston remains an appropriate treatment option.
