Summary of condition
Acid reflux is a common digestive disorder in which the stomach’s contents, including acid, flow back up into the oesophagus, causing irritation and heartburn. It can be caused by various factors such as overeating, obesity, hiatal hernia, and consuming certain foods or drinks (alcohol, coffee, fatty or spicy foods). Treatments include lifestyle changes, such as eating smaller meals and avoiding trigger foods, as well as medications like antacids and proton pump inhibitors. If symptoms persist or worsen, it’s important to see a doctor for proper evaluation and treatment.
Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are a type of medication used to treat acid reflux and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). PPIs work by reducing the amount of acid produced in the stomach. By blocking the action of the “proton pumps” that produce stomach acid, PPIs effectively reduce the symptoms of acid reflux, such as heartburn and indigestion. Common PPIs include omeprazole, lansoprazole, esomeprazole, pantoprazole, and rabeprazole. They are available over-the-counter and by prescription, and are typically taken orally once a day, before a meal. PPIs are generally considered safe and effective, but long-term use can have potential side effects and should be closely monitored by a doctor.
