Description
Nitrofurantoin is an antibiotic used to treat urinary tract infections caused by specific bacteria. It works by interfering with the bacteria’s ability to produce proteins, resulting in their death.
Nitrofurantoin is primarily used to treat acute uncomplicated urinary tract infections such as cystitis (bladder infection) and pyelonephritis (infection of the kidney). It is ineffective against viral or fungal infections.
This medication is usually taken orally, with or without food, as prescribed by a doctor. Even if symptoms improve before the medication is finished, it is critical to complete the entire course of treatment as prescribed.
Side effects of nitrofurantoin include nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, headache, and dizziness. It may also cause more serious side effects, such as lung problems, liver damage, or anaemia, especially in people who already have a medical condition. It is critical to notify your doctor if you experience any side effects while taking nitrofurantoin.
