Description
Naproxen is a widely used non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that helps relieve pain, inflammation, and stiffness. It works by reducing prostaglandins in the body, which are responsible for pain and swelling.
Uses (naproxen for arthritis)
Naproxen is commonly prescribed for arthritis pain and inflammation, including:
- Osteoarthritis
- Rheumatoid arthritis
- Ankylosing spondylitis
By reducing joint swelling and stiffness, naproxen can improve mobility and day-to-day function. It is also used for muscle pain, back pain, gout, and period pain.
Safety
When used correctly, naproxen is an effective treatment for chronic and acute pain. It should be taken at the lowest effective dose for the shortest possible time.
Because naproxen can irritate the stomach lining, a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) such as omeprazole or lansoprazole is normally prescribed alongside naproxen to help protect the stomach and reduce the risk of ulcers or bleeding. Taking naproxen with food also helps improve stomach tolerance.
Naproxen side effects
Common naproxen side effects include:
- Indigestion, heartburn, or stomach pain
- Nausea or bloating
- Headache or dizziness
Serious side effects (seek urgent medical advice):
- Stomach or intestinal bleeding (black stools, vomiting blood)
- Chest pain or shortness of breath
- Swelling of the face, lips, or throat (allergic reaction)
- Signs of kidney problems, such as reduced urine output
Caution
Use naproxen with caution if you:
- Have a history of stomach ulcers or gastrointestinal bleeding
- Have kidney, liver, or heart disease
- Have high blood pressure
- Are over 65 years old
- Are taking blood thinners, steroids, SSRIs, or other NSAIDs
Alcohol can increase the risk of stomach bleeding when taken with naproxen.
Contraindications
Naproxen should not be used if you:
- Are allergic to naproxen, aspirin, or other NSAIDs
- Have active stomach or bowel bleeding
- Have severe heart failure
- Are in the third trimester of pregnancy
