Nitrofurantoin is primarily used to treat acute uncomplicated urinary tract infections such as cystitis (bladder infection) and pyelonephritis (infection of the kidney). It is ineffective against viral or fungal infections.
This medication is usually taken orally, with or without food, as prescribed by a doctor. Even if symptoms improve before the medication is finished, it is critical to complete the entire course of treatment as prescribed.Side effects of nitrofurantoin include nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, headache, and dizziness. It may also cause more serious side effects, such as lung problems, liver damage, or anaemia, especially in people who already have a medical condition.
